The Social Security Administration announced a 2.8% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2026, effective January 2026. This increase applies to all Social Security retirement, disability (SSDI), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Understanding how the COLA was calculated, what it means for your check, and how it affects future benefits helps you plan accurately.

What Is the 2026 Social Security COLA?

The 2026 COLA is 2.8%. It was announced by the SSA in October 2025 and took effect with the January 2026 benefit payment. The COLA is determined annually by measuring the change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of the prior year to the third quarter of the current year.

How COLA Affects Future Beneficiaries

The COLA applies to your benefit from the year you become eligible — the year you turn 62 — even if you have not yet claimed. This means COLAs accumulate on your future benefit before you start collecting. A beneficiary who turned 62 in 2021 and has not yet claimed has had four years of COLAs applied to their projected benefit (5.9%, 8.7%, 3.2%, 2.5%, 2.8% from 2022–2026) — a compound increase of approximately 24% on the benefit they would have received at their 2021 eligibility amount.

The Medicare Part B Premium Offset

Social Security recipients have their Medicare Part B premium deducted from their monthly benefit. The 2026 Part B premium increased to $202.90/month (+$17.90 from 2025). For the average beneficiary receiving approximately $1,920/month, the 2026 COLA added $53.76/month, but Part B premium increases consumed $17.90 of that, leaving a net increase of approximately $35.86/month. This is known as the "hold harmless" interaction — the Part B premium increase cannot exceed the COLA amount for most beneficiaries.
